Student News

We would like to introduce you to your new National Student Executive!

National Student Representative: Hubert Cormier

Hubert Cormier is a Registered Dietitian and a Doctoral Candidate at the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods (INAF, Laval University, Quebec City). His main focus in the doctoral thesis is on nutrigenomics applied to candidate genes modulating cardio-metabolic risk factors. He is the author of the book "À bas les kilos!" and has contributed to the best-seller "Encyclopédie visuelle des aliments". Hubert loves to share his passion for nutrition by having a strong presence in media. He can frequently be seen on television and writing for blogs, newspapers and magazines. Hubert is also bilingual and has worked with Shannan (Outgoing National University Liaison) and Laura C (Outgoing University of Toronto Student Representative) to create French versions of all Student Network templates (available on dropbox).  

National University Liaison: Brandon Gheller 

Brandon completed his BSc and MSc in Applied Human Nutrition at Mount Saint Vincent University where his research projects focused on pediatric obesity. Currently, he is a full-time term faculty member at Mount Saint Vincent University and a Research Assistant at the IWK Health Centre. He recently completed his clinical dietetic internship at the IWK Health Centre where he worked with the gastroenterology team evaluating the appropriateness of current gastroesophageal reflux disease management guidelines. To date he has received funding from CIHR, NSERC, was recognized as a Scotia Scholar by the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation and, most recently was awarded the Atlantic Region and National Morgan Medal by the Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research. 

National Student Communications Director: Cassandra Gentile 

Cassandra holds a BSc in Biology from York University and is currently pursuing her BSc in Nutrition and Food at Ryerson University. At Ryerson University, she is a Nutrition Intern for the food service department, Ryerson Eats. She uses marketing and communications to disseminate student focused nutrition information to promote healthy eating on campus. Previously, she has overseen communications for the Centre for Studies in Food Security.  This also involved qualitative research about Canada’s largest community food security organization, FoodShare.  Cassandra will be assisting the National University Liaison and the National Communications director in using social media and online communication to increase awareness of CNS. Cassandra hopes to complete a dietetic internship in 2017 and looks forward to career in clinical dietetics.

National Conference Student Representative: Ifeanyi Nwachukwu

Ifeanyi Nwachukwu completed his BSc degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Nigeria before moving to England where he obtained a Master's degree in Biocatalysis at the University of Exeter. He worked for three years as an Early Stage Researcher of the European Union/Marie Curie Initial Training Network under the ‘RedCat’ consortium in the lab of Alan Slusarenko at the RWTH Aachen University in Germany. In October 2012, he started his PhD at the University of Manitoba where he is currently working in Rotimi Aluko's lab to investigate various health-promoting properties of bioactive peptides from flaxseed. In addition to being the CNS-SCN National Student Conference Representative, Ifeanyi is also the President of the Human Nutritional Sciences Graduate Students Association and a representative on the Academic Programs Committee at University of Manitoba.


ERAS® (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) 2.0 – Inspiring Change

On Saturday October 18, 2014 in Edmonton, Alberta at the Robbins Learning Centre, Royal Alexandra Hospital.

WHAT IS ERAS? Enhanced Recovery After Surgery is designed to achieve early recovery for patients undergoing major surgery. ERAS started in Europe. Alberta is the second place in Canada to introduce the pathways (Montreal was the first). The symposium features a combination of local and international sites and designed to help both those who are considering ERAS and those who have already begun.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and allied health professionals who have already implemented ERAS as well as those interested in how it can improve patient outcomes and shorten patient stays.

SPEAKERS: The day is a combination of learning from the experts (including experienced sites in Sweden and Scotland) and ERAS in Alberta. Speakers are researchers and practitioners in medicine, nursing, rehabilitation and dietetics.

Canadian Malnutrition Task Force Post-Doctoral Fellow

A 1-year post-doctoral fellowship is available with the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force (CMTF) a standing committee of the Canadian Nutrition Society.

This position is focused on knowledge translation of CMTF activities and statistical analyses of the Nutrition Care in Canadian Hospitals (NCCH) Study. This cohort study (N>1000) provides opportunity to conduct a variety of secondary data analyses focused on the nutritional care of patients in medical and surgical units in Canada. Based at the University of Waterloo, this PDF will be located in the Department of Kinesiology, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences. The faculty is a national leader in health promotion, informatics, and gerontology.

Supervisor: Prof. Heather Keller RD, PHD, Schlegel-UW Research Chair Nutrition and Aging

Term: January 2015- December 2015

Expectations: Development of knowledge translation products for CMTF as directed by the Advisory Board; secondary analyses of the NCCH and writing of manuscripts based on these analyses; development of proposal(s) focused on continuing the mandate of CMTF.

Qualifications: Doctoral studies completed in the past 3 years in a health science, and preferably nutrition. Strong data management and statistical skills. Superior communication skills.

Application: A two-page cover letter indicating how this experience will benefit the candidate in their development as an independent researcher and the expertise they bring to the position. Canadian Nutrition Society Food for Health Foundation

The Board of Directors of the CNS Food for Health Foundation is pleased to announce that the Foundation has been registered as a charitable organization by the Canada Revenue Agency, and was officially launched at the CNS Annual Meeting in St. John's, NL, on June 7, 2014.

The Canadian Nutrition Society Food for Health Foundation has been incorporated as a Foundation to promote research in the science and practice of nutrition, and to disseminate sound information about nutrition to those in the field, policy makers and the public. For more information on the CNS Food for Health Foundation and how to make a donation, please visit the CNS website.
