Analysis of routinely-collected digital health data including electronic medical records, surveys, and administrative data, have great potential for research. They can be used to address a broad range of topics, identifying for example, what services are needed, population groups facing particular vulnerability or risk, and emerging challenges. Our speakers are key research leads for large data currently available and will provide an overview of the possibilities for the Canadian health research community. This webinar is being sponsored by the Cardiometabolic Research Network, an emerging group focused on improved prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular conditions in Canada.

- Be more aware of two major data resources available to health researchers in Canada
- Describe strengths and limitations of the data and the major steps in getting data access
- Evaluate the potential usefulness of the data sets for their research interests
About the Speakers:
Dr. Michelle Greiver is a family physician and primary care researcher at the University of Toronto; she holds the Cheesbrough Chair in Family and Community Medicine Research at North York General Hospital. As Director, she oversees the Electronic Medical Record Data Safe Haven and clinical research activities for UTOPIAN, the University of Toronto Practice Based Research Network (PBRN), the largest contributor to CPCSSN. UTOPIAN participates in national and international clinical trials and EMR research. Dr. Greiver chairs the PBRN national Action Group, College of Family Physicians of Canada. She leads the Digital Health for Research and Care for the CIHR SPOR Network, Diabetes Action Canada and its national Diabetes Data Repository.
Kimberlyn McGrail is a Professor in the UBC School of Population and Public Health and Centre for Health Services and Policy Research, Director of Research for UBC Health, and Scientific Director of Population Data BC and Health Data Research Network Canada. Her research interests are quantitative policy evaluation and all aspects of population data science. Kim is Deputy Editor of the International Journal of Population Data Science, the 2009-10 Commonwealth Fund Harkness Associate in Health Care Policy and Practice, 2016 recipient of the Cortlandt JG Mackenzie Prize for Excellence in Teaching, and 2017 recipient of a UBC award for Excellence in Clinical or Applied Research.
