Many sport nutrition concepts can be applied to non-athletic populations, creating an opportunity for nutrition professionals to expand their work outside of traditional “sport" settings. This presentation will outline the uses of sport nutrition interventions in a clinical (cancer) setting.


About the Speaker: Marina Mourtzakis, BSc, BKIN, PhD, Associate Professor & Associate Chair, Applied Research, Partnerships and Outreach, University of Waterloo

Dr. Marina Mourtzakis received her undergraduate training at McMaster University. She then embarked on her doctoral studies in nutritional sciences, exercise physiology and muscle metabolism at the University of Guelph and the University of Copenhagen. Her post-doctoral work examined nutrition and body composition modalities in advanced cancer at the Cross Cancer Institute in Canada with Dr. Vickie Baracos. Dr. Mourtzakis is currently an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Applied Research, Partnerships and Outreach at the University of Waterloo. Her research program integrates nutrition, exercise and protein metabolism to understand body composition changes in cancer and acute illness.
