The Canada Research Chair is also open to internal candidates who already hold a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at McGill University.

This position is one of three currently being filled at McGill University in the area of Indigenous health and well-being. These positions are aimed at improving individual and community outcomes and practices related to Indigenous wellbeing through culturally-responsive and community-engaged teaching and research in the fields of nutrition and environment, family medicine and infectious diseases.

Position Description


The School of Human Nutrition of McGill University's Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Nutrition, Health and Food Sovereignty of Indigenous Communities in Circumpolar Regions. High priority research areas include Indigenous Peoples' food security and food systems, nutrition and health inequities, nutritional implications of market vs country foods, and social determinants of nutritional health of Indigenous Peoples in circumpolar regions. Suitable research approaches will encompass participatory research with Indigenous Peoples and communities with the potential to impact policies that consider the rights and distinctive determinants of Indigenous Peoples' health status.


McGill University is one of Canada's oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning with 40,000 students, and 1,700 tenure-track professors. The Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is located on McGill University's Macdonald Campus, which occupies 650 hectares in a beautiful waterfront setting on the western tip of the island of Montreal.

The School of Human Nutrition is a research-intensive unit with ongoing activities in our on-site research facilities including; the Centre for Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment, Margaret A. Gilliam Institute for Global Food Security, and Mary Emily Clinical Nutrition Research Unit, as well as in communities throughout the world. Other McGill-affiliated research and health centres include Participatory Research at McGill (PRAM) and the Institute for Health and Social Policy (IHSP).

The successful candidate who satisfies the eligibility conditions of the Canada Research Chair (CRC) program may be supported by the University for nomination to a Tier 2 Chair in Nutrition, Health and Food Sovereignty of Indigenous Communities in Circumpolar Regions which provides protected time for research within a full-time academic appointment.


Candidates who do not satisfy the CRC eligibility criteria for a Tier 2 Chair are nonetheless invited to apply for the position.


Nominees for Tier 2 Chair positions are expected to be emerging scholars who hold the rank of assistant or associate professor, or who possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed at these ranks. A nominee who is more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and has experienced legitimate career interruptions (e.g., maternity or parental leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, and family care) will be taken into consideration using the Tier 2 justifications process.

Job Duties


The successful candidate will teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels (e.g. NUTR 620 Nutrition of Indigenous Peoples) in courses related to nutrition and health of Indigenous Peoples and contribute to developing dietetics practicum opportunities in Indigenous communities in northern Canada. The successful candidate is expected to establish and/or maintain an externally-funded research program, and to develop research collaborations in a multi-disciplinary, multi-sectorial environment at the national and international level. The successful applicant is also expected to participate in all aspects of McGill's academic mission including teaching, graduate student supervision, mentorship, and involvement in academic and administrative committees.


Qualifications and Education Requirements


The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in nutritional sciences or a related health discipline with postdoctoral training or equivalent experience with a strong record of publication in high impact journals and/or high-quality scholarly reports within the context of Indigenous health. The candidate will have a record of demonstrated experience in conducting culturally-responsive research with Indigenous communities in circumpolar regions, including knowledge of ethical protocols that guide research with Indigenous Peoples and will be familiar with decolonizing methodologies.
