Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Nutrition and Chronic Disease Prevention and Management

The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine and the Department of Biology at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invite applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Nutrition and Chronic Disease Prevention and Management. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor (with tenure). The successful candidate will have a primary academic faculty appointment in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and a joint academic faculty appointment in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, UBC Okanagan Campus, as well as an Investigator appointment within the Faculty of Medicine's Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CCDPM). The position will be located at the UBC Okanagan Campus.

Department of Medicine, UBC Vancouver Campus

The UBC Department of Medicine provides excellence in research, teaching and clinical services related to the nature, cause and prevention of adult diseases. We are the largest Department in the Faculty of Medicine with over 1,200 faculty and staff. The Department is comprised of 18 divisions with faculty located throughout the Province of British Columbia. Department of Biology, UBC Okanagan Campus

The Department of Biology at UBC's Okanagan campus has over 100 faculty and graduate students engaged in research, including a cluster focused on microbiota and inflammatory disease. The Department is also home to approximately 800 undergraduates in five different majors, including Biology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology. Research and teaching are supported by access to advanced infrastructure including an animal care facility (for mouse in vivo experimentation), a DNA sequencing core facility, extensive microscopy resources, and expertise in glycoanalytical chemistry.

As a faculty member within the Department of Medicine and the Department of Biology and an Investigator in the CCDPM, the successful candidate will be expected to lead a strong, innovative, and internationally recognized research program in Nutrition and Chronic Disease Prevention and Management. As the Chairholder and as part of a multidisciplinary research team, the successful candidate will be engaged in:

The appointee will also be expected to participate in the teaching activities of the Department of Medicine and Department of Biology within the Southern Medical Program as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners. The appointee will report to the Department Heads of Medicine and Biology and to the Regional Associate Dean, Interior.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in nutritional science or a related discipline. Special consideration will be given to applicants who are also Registered Dietitians. The successful candidate will have an established program of research on nutrition as it applies to chronic disease prevention and/or management and a proven ability to attract external funding. If appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor, the successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching, evidence of ability in scholarly activity, and will be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community. If appointed at the rank of Associate Professor, the successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of successful teaching and ability to direct graduate students, evidence of sustained and productive scholarly activity, and must be willing to participate in the affairs of the Department and the University. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and, respect of diverse and divergent perspectives and behaviours.

Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program's Tier 2 justification process. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2021 or upon a date to be mutually agreed. Review of applications will begin on February 15, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.
