Graduate Student Opportunity

We are looking for 1-2 graduate students to work on a project focusing on the nutritional quality and valorization of the green sea urchin aquaculture industry. This project aims to understand the nutritional and hedonic differences between green sea urchin grown in a dry-land aquaculture setting compared to wild-caught sea urchins. We are also investigating the green sea urchin for unique compounds that might have biological significance beyond nutritional importance. The prospective student should have good analytical laboratory or related skills. This project will be focusing on both the nutritional analysis of the green sea urchin roe as well as the waste products of sea urchin processing (shells, viscera, etc.) This project will expose students to a variety of interdisciplinary environments and skills. We have an aquaculture industry partner and collaborate with researchers in ocean sciences. This project has both a discovery aspect and industry applied aspects. Prospective students will interact with industry partners regularly with short research-related travel between the St. John's Campus and the aquaculture facilities. The position includes a competitive stipend and the potential to receive a School of Graduate Studies fellowship. Interested students should send their resumes/CV and copy of their university transcripts (unofficial is acceptable) to sharding@mun.ca. Please reference the “sea urchin project" in your subject line.
